The Last Halloween...

The city is quiet; the streets, deserted. It doesn’t much feel like Halloween, and yet four young trick-or-treaters – a Ghost, a Devil, a Grim Reaper and a Witch – make their way through the night, door-to-door and house-by-house, gathering up an unlikely harvest of kindness amid the devastated wreckage of society’s collapse.

In a world where the only rule is that there are no rules anymore, it is perhaps a fitting irony that it should all come down to this… a
simple choice between two starkly different options.

The Last Halloween is here at last, and the time has come to make your choice.

So, what will it be?

Trick? Or treat?

Fleamarket Friday: Help Bring Hammer Horror Documentary To Life...

Filming Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (1969) with Peter Cushing

Your financial support is being sought to help fund a documentary celebrating the Hammer Horror movies produced in partnership with Warner Bros. from 1968 (Dracula Has Risen From the Grave) through to 1974 (The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires).

The Kickstarter campaign for Hammer Horror: The Warner Bros Years runs until November 18 and is looking to raise $22,000, to fund the 90-minute documentary, author the blu-rays etc.

As well as digital streaming and blu-rays of the documentary, backer rewards include a variety of limited edition, high-quality, art posters, which can be seen on the campaign site.

The documentary is being made by Diabolique Films, the film production arm of Diabolique Magazine. It will be produced, written and directed by Marcus Hearn, Hammer Films’ official historian, in association with Jonathan Rigby and other film historians and authors.

According to the fundraising website:
The documentary will feature exclusive interviews with many of the key players from that period, as well as authors and film historians like Jonathan Rigby and Constantine Nasr. Also included will be rare production stills, film footage, Hammer’s original shooting locations, and access to previously unseen archive documents. The documentary will be available via streaming and in a limited run region-free blu-ray release, exclusive to this fundraiser.
Recently confirmed to take part in the documentary is the beautiful Veronica Carlson (featured on HeroPress earlier today!) from Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed, The Horror Of Frankenstein,  and Dracula Has Risen From The Grave.

Top Shelf: Classic Monsters Of The Movies...

It's over six years since I last wrote an entry for the Top Shelf column, profiling a magazine I'm enjoying, and a lot has changed in both HeroPress and my life.

One thing that hasn't changed is my love of monsters and that's what makes the new magazine, Classic Monsters Of The Movies, so perfect for me... and I suspect many readers of this blog.

Coming out of the Classic Monsters website, the quarterly, 68-page, magazine does pretty much what it says on the tin. This is a loving homage to iconic monsters - and their movies - from the silent era of cinema up to the modern day, but with an emphasis on the golden age of Universal, Hammer etc

Enthusiastic articles abound, covering - in this first issue - Boris Karloff, Christopher Lee's Dracula, zombies (from White Zombie through to The Walking Dead), the Aurora Monster model kits, misdirection in old horror films, and so on.

This is very much written for fans, in a positive and upbeat style, without a hint of cynicism or high-brow, pseudo-intellectual, dismantling of our beloved movies.

A very well-designed and colourful publication, Classic Monsters Of The Movies boasts copious film stills, posters and artwork to illustrate its articles.

You can tell just by flicking through an edition that a lot of thought has gone into the appearance of the magazine; realising that we're talking about a very visual medium here you're not greeted by a wall of text when you open your issue.

It also evokes the feel and passion of older monster movie magazines, such as Famous Monsters Of Filmland and its ilk.

Possibly the only real drawback of this Classic Monsters Of The Movies, is the fact that it is is currently only available from direct from the publisher.

A single issue costs £6.99 (plus postage), with an annual subscription for four issues setting you back £24 (plus postage).

Issue two is due out in January and will include an examination of the enduring appeal of the Mummy, the career of Bela Lugosi, Hammer's Frankenstein movies etc

Torn From The Headlines: A Catalogue Of Creepiness...

What better place to turn to at this time of year for atmospheric source material than real life? The Internet is awash with Halloween-themed lists of memory-haunted locales and folkloric creatures that are perfect inspiration fodder for both gamers and writers.

Some of the places and events listed might be known to you, but I'm sure if you dig deep enough you'll unearth a fresh horror to fire your imagination...

Here's a small selection of what the Internet has to offer:

Fleamarket Friday: The Return Of The Doctor-Donna Dream Team...

With the current wave of exciting announcements of New Who cast members coming to Big Finish to continue their Doctor Who adventures in audio form, there was one announcement in particular I was keeping my fingers crossed for... and it finally came true this week.

David Tennant and Catherine Tate are returning to their roles of the Tenth Doctor and Donna Noble for a series of brand new adventures, starting in May next year.

The first new series of stories consists of three plays that are available for pre-order from Big Finish, either individually or as a season bundle. There's even a limited edition bundle, for sightly more, that includes "exclusive artwork, photography, articles and a one-hour documentary featuring interviews with the stars and production team".

Supernatural: Soul Survivor

Although there is a change in Dean's demonic circumstances, Cas gets a temporary 'grace' boost (thanks to an unexpected assist from Crowley), and we get to see the King Of Hell's daily grind, Soul Survivor really felt like it was treading water.

Taken together, these first three episodes of season 10 come across as an extended prologue, hinting at something bigger and better, but taking its time to get there.

The episode kicked off with Dean trussed up in the Bunker and Sam working the old ritual of purified blood to cure him of his demonic persona, while Cas continued his road trip with Hannah, on their way to the Bunker, to help Sam with Dean's situation.

Meanwhile, down in Hell, Crowley was getting grief from a demon unimpressed with Crowley's absences and his friendship with Dean.

There was a dramatic final act cat-and-mouse adventure around The Bunker as an escaped Dean sought to rain down bloody vengeance on his well-meaning younger brother, but the most interesting part of the episode came in the enigmatic coda that suggested there was a powerful new player in town.

Throwback Thursday: Pleasant Dreams!

Rodney Ascher, director of the controversial documentary Room 237 about Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, has just released his new documentary, The Nightmare, about the phenomenon of sleep paralysis.

Now this is something I have experience of.

Despite my love of all things horror-orientated (monsters, cannibals, ghosts etc), when it comes to real life I'm not so brave, so as we are fast approaching Halloween I thought it would be time to share my own 'horror movie' experience:

As I've recounted in several Throwback Thursdays recently, back in 2002 I went to visit Paul when he was working for an English-language newspaper in Beijing, China.

He was staying in a big, one-bedroom flat in a tall tower block, so I was sleeping on a makeshift (but comfortable) bed in his lounge.

Alcohol usually played a large part in making sure I had a good night's sleep ... but one night I awoke with an "invisible person" sitting on my chest; pinning me down. I couldn't move!

I have no recollection of what happened later but talking to Paul the next day I discovered I wasn't the first person this had happened to. There was the usual urban myth circulating about someone jumping to their death from one of the flats ... but no-one could ever say which one.

Later I read about 'sleep paralysis', which (basically) means your mind has woken up but your body is still asleep, so you can see and think - but not move; but at the time I was as convinced as I've ever been that I had come face-to-invisible-face with a ghost!!!

From Wikipedia:
In Chinese folk culture, sleep paralysis is referred as "gui yà chúang" (鬼压床), literally: "Ghost press bed": 鬼: ghost, 压: press, 床: bed. The belief is that a spirit or ghost is sitting or lying on top of the individual while they were sleeping, causing the sleep paralysis. This is thought to be a minor body possession by the forces from the dead, and usually doesn't cause any harm to the victim.

Together Forever, Never Forgotten...

Today would have been my late mum's birthday, and it also happens to be the tenth anniversary of dad's death (a tragic piece of timing, but I'm not entirely sure if mum ever registered it as the Alzheimer's was already working its evil upon her).

To mark the day, Rachel and I took Alice to the church yard in Pembury, so we could place a fresh floral display (put together by Rachel's mum) on their grave.

There is so much sadness associated with this day for me, but having Rachel and Alice with me makes it bearable.

It's a great pity that neither mum or dad got to meet Alice, as I'm sure they would have loved her as much as we do.

When I was born, they had a black Labrador called Ben who was, apparently, very protective of his "puppy" (ie. baby me).

I guess Ben must have died before mum and dad moved from Tunbridge Wells to Pembury as I only remember growing up with a succession of pet cats running the house.

K9 To Shake Up Cinemas In 2017...

The Doctor's faithful tin dog is getting his own movie - K9: Timequake!

Written by Bob Baker, one of K9's original creators, the film is due to hit screens in 2017 (the 40th anniversary of K9's first appearance on television in The Invisible Enemy).

Although little has yet been revealed about the movie, we know the action takes place in deep space and supposedly pits the robot mutt against one of The Doctor's more powerful enemies, Omega (from The Three Doctors and Arc Of Infinity).

The suggestion is this will be the redesigned K9 from the 2009 Australian TV series (that was shown on Channel 5 over here), but whether it ties into that show's continuity is also unknown at this point.
