If You Weren't Already Jazzed For Stranger Things, This Trailer Opens With D&D...

As well as the obvious Spielbergian riffs, Stranger Things also stirs dormant memories of the wonderful Disney Witch Mountain duology that fascinated me as a kid.

Supernatural: Into The Mystic

Lucifer's words have wormed their way into Sam's head, making him doubt himself, but Dean finds a local case for them, a locked room murder at an old folks' home.

At first they reckon it's a run-of-the-mill vengeful spirit that can be beaten with the classic "salt and burn the bones". However, a second murder dispels that theory and leads them to believe it's a malevolent banshee, preying on the vulnerable.

Teaming up with  Eileen Leahy (Shoshannah Stern), a freelance hunter who has been tracking the banshee, and with the assistance of Mildred Baker (the ageless Dee Wallace, star of E.T., The Howling, Cujo etc), the feisty and flirtatious resident they believe is going to be the next target, the brothers set a trap for the monster.

Meanwhile Lucifer is walking around in Castiel's body (major props to Misha Collins for his portrayal of the possessed angel), supposedly looking for a spell that could take down Amara, but also talking Dean into opening up about his 'connection' to The Darkness.

Into The Mystic was a superb episode, that cleverly interwove a real old school "monster-of-the-week" episode with major threads from the season's overarching plotline.

Even though the CGI monster wasn't one of the show's finest, the lore developed around the creature is so deep that it makes the episode's antagonist fascinating enough that you can look past the not-so-special effects.

The balance between levity and the violence of the banshee's attacks in Into The Mystic was also handled deftly, particularly Mildred's cougar-esque advances on Dean, who was clearly flattered and, probably, slightly tempted because of his professed attraction to Blanche from The Golden Girls!

And, if you've been following my Supernatural reviews, you'll know I always welcome new additions to the core family of characters, so I was delighted by the introduction of Eileen and very pleased to see that this new hunter survived to the end of the story, with the door left open for her to return at a later date.

Throwback Thursday: That Feeling When...

...you realise that your favourite tune from Mary Poppins is actually from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!

Up until a few weeks ago I would have sworn blind that Me Ol' Bamboo appeared in Mary Poppins, but then I couldn't understand why it wasn't on any version of the soundtrack.

Turns out the reason it wasn't included in the soundtrack albums is because it's not from that film!

I'm pretty sure I was conflating it with Step In Time, which is from Mary Poppins, and I think, listening to them both, you'll see it's quite an easy mistake to make. Of course, both songs are also sung by the immortal Dick Van Dyke.

Along with Bedknobs & Broomsticks, I loved these iconic films as a kid and am now rediscovering them and their very catchy tunes as an adult; not that I ever "went off" them, they just existed in my head and on TV whenever they were screened.

Over the last year I've been getting them as birthday and Christmas presents from Rachel.

Podcast On Being An Everyday Hero...

Brett Culp, the film-maker behind the uplifting documentary Legends Of The Knight (about people inspired to do good by the story of Batman) and the forthcoming Look To The Sky (which again investigates the inspirational power of superhero mythology) has launched his own podcast.

Being An Everyday Hero is a series of short (15-30 minute) monologues about "making a positive impact", be it in your work environment, your home, or the wider community.

As of today, there are currently five episodes available.

Return Of The Trigan Empire...

Over at From The Sorcerer's Cave, Trey Causey was reminiscing about Don Lawrence's gorgeous painted art in the British comic book sci-fi epic The Trigan Empire, which was serialised in Look And Learn magazine.

I have strong memories from my youth of discovering this strip around the same time I was reading 2000AD, back in the late '70s, when my head was full of Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy, Star Wars, and Dungeons & Dragons.

A time when man's future in the stars seemed a certainty and sci-fi was just a reality waiting to happen.

At least that's how it felt to an 11-year-old's overstimulated brain, exposed to all this futuristic imagery and mind-blowing ideas.

A typical day in The Trigan Empire

I also know I had the massive hardback book pictured below, which collected, if not all, then a major chunk of the story... but somewhere along the way, over the years, it has disappeared into the ether. I have a strong suspicion that I loaned it to someone, long forgotten now, and never got it back.

It really surprises me that no one has relaunched The Trigan Empire, or reprinted it, in recent years, or optioned it for a big budget movie deal or even a roleplaying setting.

If You Aren't Already Terrified About The Precarious Balance Of The World...

On the other hand, great fodder for modern RPG campaigns, from espionage to supers and cyberpunk, and all points in-between.

See The New USS Enterprise In Exquisite Detail Before They Destroy It Again...

Star Trek: The Fast And The Furious looks pretty awful, but that doesn't mean the tech is going to be shoddy.

Popular Mechanics has an eye-wateringly lovely large-scale cutaway of the spaceship that has to be seen on a large computer monitor, rather than a poky little mobile device, to truly appreciate.

Our First Look At Powerless, The New DC Comics Comedy Show...

Honestly? It sounds terrible. But the combo of Alan Tudyk and Vanessa Hudgens (and superheroes... kinda) will get me watching, in the hope that it's actually not too bad.

I'm also guessing it's not taking part in the Berlanti-verse, but yet another corner of DC's Multiverse.

Does this mean we might see different actors playing Superman, The Flash, Supergirl, Green Arrow etc at some stage?

Will The Tuesday Knights Soon Be Donning Capes And Leaping Tall Buildings?

With the Tuesday Knights' Heroes & Other Worlds campaign well into its third act, and the apocalypse looming (in game, not in reality, I should add), I've been giving continued serious thought to our next campaign.

I'm really looking at something that could be a "forever campaign" - in the style of those I loved reading about when I discovered this creative hobby back in the day - and, outside of gaming, my first love is comic book superheroes (both in comics and on TV and the cinema screen). So why not combine the two?

With the third edition of Villains & Vigilantes soon to debut on Kickstarter that's a strong contender. It would also be an homage to the wonderful games of V&V that Steve ran for us back in the 1980s.

The picture above shows a portion of my superhero RPG collection (missing are my Icons books, Golden Heroes, and huge Marvel Super Heroes collection, both of which are on shelves up in the gamesroom, while this shelf is in my bedside cabinet).

From left to right, we have a few Champions books (each for a different edition!), a variety of different iterations of DC Comics RPGs, up to the most recent Mutants & Masterminds version, followed by the handful of actual Mutants & Masterminds books I own and then, finally, my Villains & Vigilantes books.

Away from straight-up costumed superheroes, other heroic genres/ game systems that are still in the mix include: Ubiquity (particularly Hollow Earth Expedition), Ghostbusters, and Urban Knights (the 70s cop show game currently on Kickstarter, that - like my main idea - would allow me to utilise my Knight City setting).

Watch this space for further developments...

Also, from Suicide Squad, Sucker For Pain by Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Ty Dolla $ign, Logic, Imagine Dragons, and X Ambassadors.

Need A Name For Your Super Team?

A handy little table for creating superhero team name ideas. Obviously if all your players live in the same town (which I guess is quite likely) they should use their place of birth instead to mix things up a bit.

But at least you should get three or four different possibilities, which, in turn, might spark other suggestions from the players.

My name 'suggestion' is Space Twelve (or Space Squadron), depending on whether I use my place of birth or where I live now.

Knole's Deer Or No Deer...

Today, Rachel and I took Alice to Knole Park in Sevenoaks, the parkland surrounding the historic Knole House, both of which are maintained by the National Trust.

The weather stayed fine for our walk around the park, circumnavigating the 500-year-old house's walled gardens.

This gave Alice her first chance to meet some deer, as well as the usual large selection of new canine chums (until you're a dog owner you really don't notice how many other people have dogs with them when you go places), watch some cricket being played, and generally have a magnificent run around in the sun, on her extendable lead.

Before we got to Knole though we stopped in the town so we could take Alice to the amazing Barkers Of Sevenoaks, an entire shop dedicated to pampering pooches with doggy treats and toys.

Alice couldn't believe it, she was in seventh heaven, an entire shop full of everything she likes!

If you're interested, you can find more pictures of our time at Knole over here on Alice's Facebook page, and there's also a small selection of pictures we took in Barkers.

SIX OF THE BEST: The ToiBox Of Words

Paranormal and fantasy author Toi Thomas, of the Eternal Curse series among others, "loves comic books, vinyl records, chocolate, and a good film". She also writes romances under the pen name of Glorie Townson. And in between all this somehow finds the time to keep her blog, The ToiBox Of Words, up to date.

(1) How long have you been blogging, and how’d you get into it in the first place?

I've been blogging for about six years. I've gone through five blogs, but none were failures. Some of my early blogs were virtual journals helping me through specific projects. The two I have now are more interactive.

(2) What do you blog about, and how frequently do you post?

I blog about what interests me and I sometimes sprinkle in updates about my writing. I enjoy most things geek, movies, books, and music. I used to post daily but am slowly moving toward once weekly posting for both my current blogs to allow me a chance to focus on other creative projects.

(3) How does your blog stand out from all the rest?

I think I've done a pretty good job of making my readers feel like they are in the spotlight. I share a bit of myself with them and always ask that they do the same. I really do want to get to know them, and many of them I have. Plus, I think I have a really cool blog name. Since I'm Toi Thomas, I invite everyone to my ToiBox of Words. My newest blog, all about interviews, is called "Who is so you?"

Eternal Curse: Giovanni's Angel

(4) What’s the best (and worst) thing about blogging?

The best thing about blogging is the experience of community and the freedom to express oneself. The worst thing about blogging, to me, is the fact that I never seem to have enough time to blog about everything I want to.

(5) Do you have any self-imposed rules (or guidelines) for your blog?

Yes, I do have rules for my blogs. I like to give people the freedom to express themselves but I don't and will not promote hate speech. Other than that, the only other rule I really have is that I don't promote erotica. I write and blog for an adult audience, but I prefer my content be somewhat suitable for mature teens who may stumble across my blogs.

(6) Name one blog everyone should be reading (other than your own).

It's hard choosing just one blog I think others should read so I hope two doesn't get me banned. I think everyone should check out The Armchair Squid and Alex J. Cavanaugh.

"There'll Always be An England!"

This weekend Hever Castle - one of the handful of castles within easy driving distance of our house - is hosting its Home Front Event, celebrating life in England during the 1940s.

This being England it, of course, poured with rain, but not until we'd seen the majority of the tents anyway.

We managed to eventually take shelter in a tent with a nice cream tea, while a Spitfire did a fly-by. It flew over twice, but I think the imminent thunder and lightning probably persuaded the pilot that that was enough.

There were some magnificent and informative living history displays, manned by highly knowledgable re-enactors. For instance, a pair of naval gentlemen - because we asked - explained the history of the bag which you can see Rachel carrying in the picture below.

It was bought for me by an old work colleague who collects militaria (I'd been after the sort of bag Indiana Jones wears sometimes!), and I generally use it for carrying my bits and bobs when I go shopping etc

Turns out it's a Type VII army gas mask holder, from later in the war, designed to actually be worn across the chest.

My Ladies: Rachel, in one of her beautiful vintage dresses, and Alice

We also listened to an interesting discussion of how the RAF monitored - and responded to - the German bombers and fighter planes coming in to attack our towns and cities.

There was an amazing vintage first aid tent, full of period medical instruments - some of which I recognised from visits to the doctor in my youth and my parents' own medicine cabinet!

Naturally, there was also music and dancing, and Alice proved very popular throughout the day, getting a lot of attention and affection, which she lapped up. We'd only been at the castle for a few minutes before a family asked if they could take a picture with her!

You can see more of my pictures of the day over on Facebook. Rachel has a selection of pictures on her Facebook page and there are also a few pictures of Alice at the event over on her Facebook page.

And it wouldn't be a Knight family day out without an amusing picture of me eating something:

This beast came from the barbeque tent and was called an "adult sausage", which tickled my puerile sense of humour.
