I only discovered The Venture Bros this year, it being hidden away on the Fox satellite channel, late at night, here in the UK, with little indication of what it's all about.
The short seasons, and the fact that new ones aren't released every year, also make it quite elusive but if you're a fan of comic book superheroes an/or old cartoons like Jonny Quest and Space Ghost (and don't object to them being cruelly - but brilliantly - satirised) then it's worth making the effort to track this show down.
The Venture Bros. is an American animated television series that premiered on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim on February 16, 2003. It is considered to be an action/adventure series that mixes comedy and drama while chronicling the lives and adventures of the Venture family: well-meaning but incompetent teenagers Hank and Dean Venture; their emotionally insecure, unethical and under-achieving super-scientist father Dr. Thaddeus "Rusty" Venture; the family's bodyguard, the ultra-violent and psychopathic secret agent Brock Samson, or his temporary replacement, the reformed super villain and paedophile Sergeant Hatred; and the family's self-proclaimed arch-nemesis, The Monarch, a butterfly-themed super villain. The show was renewed for a seventh season and is currently the longest running original series on Adult Swim to still be in production.
The humour is broad and adult, but sparklingly written (for instance, I love their gruesome parody of The Fantastic Four), often laugh-out-loud funny, but also a mine of inspiration for gamers (particularly in the superhero genre), from the amazingly creative villain names and their various organisations to the convoluted and hilarious plots (that often slip into the background and end up playing second-fiddle to anarchic and comedic shenanigans).
