How Fantastic Four #17 Changed Lives...

This Is It: A Scan Of My ACTUAL 53-Year-Old Copy Of Fantastic Four #17!

Listen to Games Of Thrones and Wild Cards creator George RR Martin talk about the letter he wrote to Marvel Comics about Fantastic Four #17 (his first published letter), and how the comic 'changed his life':

This clip comes from Superheroes Decoded, a two-part special paralleling America's rise as a superpower and the evolution of the comic book superhero, that airs on the History Channel tonight (in the States) at 9 pm ET/PT.

I'm hoping it'll be shown over here soon, as I love a good comic book documentary.

Fantastic Four #17 was also a pivotal comic book in my own geeky genesis, as I've chronicled before. Without that story, I wouldn't be the person I am today.

It's disgrace that there's no FF title on the racks these days. Isn't it about time Marvel brought the Fantastic Four back?

First Google, Then Facebook, And Finally The World (Bwahahaha!)

My glacially-slow schemes for global domination continue. With HeroPress lurching back to life in this post-Winter thaw, I have taken note of criticism from family and friends and created a dedicated Facebook presence for my geek-fuelled witterings.

After the Bank Holiday, no longer will my personal Facebook wall be log-jammed with reposts from this site.

Those will now appear on the HeroPress Facebook page.

While, obviously, the blog itself remains my primary focus, the Facebook page is designed to widen the field of possible readers and find additional interesting souls to engage with (without further alienating the number of my Facebook friends who couldn't care less what costume Spider-Man is wearing this week or how many sides does do the best polyhedral dice have) .

This should also, hopefully, signal an end to self-indulgent, overly-introspective blog posts about blogging... and a return to posts and pictures about superheroes, weird stuff, aliens, cosplay et al.

Please feel free to like and/or follow the HeroPress page on Facebook, post comments there, share it etc

Step Out For Stroke: Help Me Help Others...

Unsteady As She Goes: Alice leads me through the park

Thank you for all the marvellous support so far for my sponsored walk in support of The Stroke Association.

Alice and I (assisted by Rachel) will be participating in an in an "all-abilities" walk in Capstone Park, Chatham, in June, one of a number of Step Out For Stroke events going on around the country.

Each Step Out for Stroke follows a course, starting and finishing in the same location, and most are around one mile in length. Depending on your ability you can set your own distance: 10 steps, 100 meters, one mile or 10 laps.

If I can hobble round the circuit once I will be very pleased.

I'm aiming to raise £500, and within the last seven days have almost reached half that already. This is incredible, especially given that health-wise this as been a pretty rough week for me and so my eye wasn't always on the ball when it's come to training and self-promotion.

JustGiving - Sponsor me now! It's 12 years since I suffered my stroke during an emergency, lifesaving operation at Kings College Hospital in London (after my sudden aneurysm).

While it has left me unable to work, walking with a limp, memory like Swiss cheese, and prone to panic attacks (as well as numerous other fun little side effects), I consider myself lucky.

There are many people who are far worse off than me and they are the ones The Stroke Association can help.

This is the second time I have taken part in Step Out For Stroke, having raised over £1,000 back in 2014, thanks to the incredible backing of friends and family around the world.

As well as the inspiring camaraderie of being with fellow stroke survivors, one of my enduring memories of that walk was the presence of a hyper-active dog, the beloved pet of one of the other walkers.

The hilarity and joy that Bubbles added to the day was certainly one of the factors that played into our decision to get Alice three years ago, and I can't wait for her to join Rachel and I on this upcoming walk.

Slowly, HeroPress Awakens...

Spring has sprung and the green shoots of HeroPress's return have begun to blossom.

These past few weeks I've been getting back into the swing of posting - albeit primarily film trailers - by successfully managing my blog-life balance.

My health, as ever, remains an issue, as I can never guarantee how I'm going to feel from one day to the next (this week, in particular, an accumulation of poor nights' sleep have ground me down).

But by taking a tighter rein on my time management, I'm convinced I can continue my quest to mould this blog into something useful, something that has a distinct voice.

There's still no concrete plan for the future of the site - except that it will continue - beyond returning its focus to its first principals: superheroes (in comics, films, TV, gaming etc). We're not called HeroPress for nothing!

Thank you for continuing to follow my erratic posts and for commenting here, on Facebook, and on Google+

When Flash Comes Back From His Break...

The Flash return to Sky 1 in the UK next Tuesday (May 2), along with Supergirl.

Meanwhile, here's a refresher on recent events in Arrow (which returns on Thursday):

Weekly World News: It's The End Of The World As We Know It...

As ever, a quick scan of recent issues of Weekly World News conjures up a cornucopia of potential plot hooks for gamesmasters' running fantastical contemporary adventures.

From alien conspiracies to apocalyptic proclamations, there's something for everyone, whatever your games' genre of choice (be it X-Files-style investigations, Supernatural monster bustin', or straight-up superheroes).

Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Legacy...

Robotech Returns!

I was all over Robotech back in the day (the Comico comics, from the late '80s, rather than the cartoons, which were hard to come by over here in the pre-Internet, pre-satellite and cable Dark Ages).

So I'm rather excited that Titan Comics are bringing them back, and have tapped a quality writer like Brian Wood for the series.

That said, I am to keep my pull-list reasonably trim, but this is very tempting.

The first issue of the new Robotech is scheduled to hit shelves on July 26, with the publicity blurb reading:
Not just another retelling of the Macross saga … In July, the story continues as we bring Carl Macek’s original vision full circle. Taking into account every iteration of the series, this new Robotech #1 casts a fresh eye over classic characters like Rick Hunter, Lisa Hayes, Lynn Minmei, Roy Fokker, Claudia Grant, and Henry Gloval. Brian Wood and Marco Turini take us back to a Macross Island where nothing can be taken for granted.

Mark "Alien Day" With Covenant Prequel...

The Crossing, an official prologue short to Alien: Covenant, reveals what happened to crew members Dr. Elizabeth Shaw and the synthetic David after the events of Prometheus. Set aboard an abandoned Engineer vessel, Dr. Shaw repairs David as they continue their search for humanity’s creators.

DVD Of The Week: The Void (2016)

Late at night, on a deserted road outside of town, Sheriff Daniel Carter (Aaron Poole) comes across a wounded man stumbling out of the woods.

The lawman rushes the injured man to the nearest hospital, a fire-damaged building on the point of closure, operated by a skeleton staff, including the sheriff's estranged wife, Allison (Kathleen Munroe).

Within moments of their arrival - and a nurse going insane - the dilapidated hospital is besieged by knife-wielding, sheet-wearing, cultists.

From there The Void is a non-stop, violent, gore-splattered, thrill-ride through Lovecraft country by way of Assault On Precinct 13, The Thing and Hellraiser.

This is a film - whose plot unfolds over a single night - that just doesn't let up. The action kicks off from the opening scene, backstories are sketched in with deft brevity, and the viewers find themselves sucked into the absorbing, claustrophobic, horror.

Malleable architecture, hallucinations, and shapeshifting, tentacled, monsters are just part of the sanity-assaulting fun that the writing-directing team of Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie bombard the audience with.

And it's probably worth drawing attention to a couple of extended scenes that feature bright, rapidly flashing lights that could affect people susceptible to such light shows.

There's a strong flavour of vintage '80s horror here (but delivered with ichor-dripping 21st Century practical effects) that should satisfy any fan of HP Lovecraft's cosmic horror who tends to find the best cinematic realisations of his themes come in films not directly based on his stories (such as the aforementioned The Thing, In The Mouth Of Madness, Event Horizon etc).

It would be a gross exaggeration to say The Void is wholly original, but the diverse recipe of influences tap into so  many of my favourite movies, sub-genres, and ideas of what makes good horror, that I embraced it all the more warmly.

In fact there was a part of me that couldn't help wondering if this script was lifted from a game of Call Of Cthulhu, with a amount of pointless gunplay, fire-axe-swinging, and pulp novel machismo in the face of monstrosities not meant for the eyes of man.

Sabrina Goes Gothic As She Flees The Family Home On Cover Of Long-Awaited Return...

"WITCH-WAR" Part One (of Six): The Revenants: Sabrina's father, Edward Spellman, is back from the dead, inhabiting the body of the newly resurrected Harvey Kinkle! Sabrina, believing the love of her high school life is back, arranges for a romantic rendezvous - but neither Hilda nor Zelda want that reunion to take place and are willing to start a witch-war to keep them apart! Meanwhile, the diabolical Madam Satan reveals her true plans for the Spellman family... You dare not miss the last page of this masterpiece of the macabre!
The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina is finally due to drop its next issue on May 7... almost a year after it was first solicited and since we last saw a new issue of the erratic title.

Still no solid news when - if ever - we'll see another issue Sabrina's stablemate, the equally infrequent Afterlife With Archie though; even though Archie Comics rather randomly threw out a self-contained, one-off, Jughead-as-werewolf comic the other month to appease fans of its horror imprint.
